Happy Friday,
November marks National American Indian Heritage Month, a time dedicated to honoring the vibrant and varied cultures, traditions, and historical legacies of Native Americans. It's also an occasion to recognize the valuable contributions made by Native Americans. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush enacted a resolution officially designating November as the inaugural National American Indian Heritage Month. The Mount Vernon School District observes this significant moment alongside our families and students.
Milk Carton Shortage
You may have heard that schools have been dealing with a milk carton shortage. Rest assured that our Nutrition Services Department is prepared. Starting next Wednesday our district will be receiving a variety of milk in half pints. This will continue until the shortage is fixed or until they aren't able to receive any half pints. If the district gets into an environment where half pints are not available, gallons of milk will be brought in for special diets, and will offer an alternative beverage in the form of Water or Juice to the general student population.
Transition to Kindergarten
This week marked the commencement of the educational journey for our youngest learners. Our elementary buildings were prepared for their arrival, and our amazing teachers were eager to begin this journey with our students. Happiness and enthusiasm were on students' faces, as our staff welcomed them into their classrooms. We are thrilled to have all of our Transition to Kindergarten students become part of the Mount Vernon family!
CWU Field Trip with On-The-Spot Admissions Event
MVHS Seniors visited Central Washington University on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Students toured the campus and participated in an On-The-Spot Admissions Event. CWU admitted 16 Seniors! Student's were recognized with a CWU Certificate and swag. Way to go students!
Latinos In Action (LIA) Founders Day Event
This week, MVHS brought students together for an incredible LIA Founders Day event! LaVenture Middle school and Mount Baker Middle school students had the chance to connect with their high school peers, thanks to the inspiring Dr. Enriquez, the founder and CEO of LIA. He shared his incredible journey and empowered our students to realize their leadership potential. During this event, our middle schoolers teamed up with their high school mentors to foster meaningful relationships and, of course, have some fun along the way! A huge shout out to the dedicated LIA teachers from both middle school and high school for making this day possible.
MVHS Mariachi & Folklorico showcase their talent
The MV Mariachi and MV Folklorico put on a show for a packed audience and had the chance to showcase our acclaimed Mariachi Program. Last weekend's WALAS (Washington Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents) program gave some of our administrators an opportunity to be part of this special event. MV Mariachi students had a special moment performing with Richard Carranza, the former Chancellor of New York City Schools and the Keynote Speaker. He sang and played the Guitarron with our MV Mariachi! Thank you for showcasing our amazingly talented students Mr. Rivera, and great job MV Mariachi students.
This last weekend, the MV Mariachi and MV Folklorico sold out the Bainbridge Island Performing Art Center and performed in traditional Dia de Los Muertos Songs. This was the first time Mariachi Music was played at Bainbridge Island Performing Art Center, what an honor! Congratulations Mr. Rivera and MV Mariachi!
Centennial hosts Native American Heritage Assembly
Centennial had a great lineup of guests who spoke at this morning’s Native American Heritage Assembly. Thank you Centennial for hosting, and a huge shout out to guest speakers: Megan Balatche Claudia Tiepelman, and Eric Day.
Classroom Visits: Pillar 1 (Mission, Vision, and Core Values)
This week I visited classrooms at Madison and Centennial Elementary, Mount Baker Middle School and MVHS. I saw students engaging in their math activities in Gracie Woolley’s and Leah Bright’s classrooms. While my main focus at Centennial was to visit specialists, I did get a chance to visit intern Makenna Drye’s class where students were creating their own stories. In Rene Godina’s, Alix Glossen’s, and Jenny Bergsma’s classes I saw students demonstrating their learning with enthusiasm. At Mount Baker, the level of students actively participating in reading, math, robotics, and digital arts was impressive. Thank you Geri Cleve, Korinne Getz, Jodi Burkholder, and Drew Holzinger for the opportunity to visit your classrooms.
Lastly, the focus of my visit at the high school was instruction in the math department. Thank you to the following teachers and support staff, Anya Keen, Gabriela Flores, Anne Marie Morse, Allyson Pederson, Aaron Young, Arlene Thogersen, Steven Kreft, Ali Lilly and Bryndal Barber Pixly for the chance to visit and see the great learning occurring in your classroom! Classroom visits provide me with the opportunity not only to meet our exceptional staff and students, but also to witness the significant work that occurs in our buildings on a daily basis. Operation Green Light
Operation Green Light brings together numerous cities and counties to express solidarity with our Veterans by illuminating their structures with a green glow. This initiative offers a meaningful opportunity to demonstrate our community's backing for local Veterans. Join us in displaying your support November 6th-12th by illuminating your building or house in green to pay tribute to our Veterans.
MVHS Music Boosters
The MVHS Percussion Ensemble (sponsored by the MVHS Music Boosters) is currently raising funds to help purchase a new 5 Octave Marimba! Students are working incredibly hard and have been invited to perform at the Washington Music Educators Association State Conference in 2024, and they need this instrument for the upcoming performance. Noviembre marca el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Indígena Americana, un tiempo dedicado a honrar las vibrantes y variadas culturas, tradiciones y legados históricos de los nativos americanos. También es una ocasión para reconocer las valiosas contribuciones realizadas por los nativos americanos. En 1990, el presidente George H. W. Bush promulgó una resolución que designaba oficialmente noviembre como el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Indígena Americana inaugural. El Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon observa este momento significativo junto a nuestras familias y estudiantes.
Escasez de cartón de leche
Es posible que haya escuchado que las escuelas han estado enfrentando una escasez de cartones de leche. Tenga la seguridad de que nuestro Departamento de Servicios de Nutrición está preparado. A partir del próximo miércoles nuestro distrito estará recibiendo una variedad de leches en medias pintas. Esto continuará hasta que se solucione la escasez o hasta que no puedan recibir media pinta. Si el distrito se encuentra en un ambiente donde no hay media pinta disponible, se traerán galones de leche para dietas especiales y se ofrecerá una bebida alternativa en forma de agua o jugo a la población estudiantil en general.
Transición al jardín de infantes
Esta semana marcó el comienzo del viaje educativo para nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes. Nuestros edificios de primaria estaban preparados para su llegada y nuestros increíbles maestros estaban ansiosos por comenzar este viaje con nuestros estudiantes. La felicidad y el entusiasmo estaban en los rostros de los estudiantes cuando nuestro personal les dio la bienvenida a sus aulas. ¡Estamos encantados de que todos nuestros estudiantes de Transición a Kindergarten formen parte de la familia Mount Vernon!
Excursión a CWU con evento de admisión en el acto
Los estudiantes del último año de MVHS visitaron la Universidad Central Washington el miércoles 1 de noviembre de 2023. Los estudiantes recorrieron el campus y participaron en un evento de admisión en el lugar. ¡CWU admitió a 16 personas mayores! Los estudiantes fueron reconocidos con un certificado y un botín de CWU. ¡Así se hace estudiantes!
Evento del Día de los Fundadores de Latinos en Acción (LIA)
¡Esta semana, MVHS reunió a los estudiantes para un increíble evento del Día de los Fundadores de LIA! Los estudiantes de las escuelas secundarias LaVenture Middle y Mount Baker tuvieron la oportunidad de conectarse con sus compañeros de la escuela secundaria, gracias al inspirador Dr. Enríquez, fundador y director ejecutivo de LIA. Compartió su increíble viaje y empoderó a nuestros estudiantes para que realizaran su potencial de liderazgo. Durante este evento, nuestros estudiantes de secundaria se asociaron con sus mentores de la escuela secundaria para fomentar relaciones significativas y, por supuesto, ¡divertirse en el camino! Un gran agradecimiento a los dedicados maestros de LIA tanto de la escuela secundaria como de la secundaria por hacer posible este día.
MVHS Mariachi & Folklórico muestran su talento

Gracias por mostrar a nuestros estudiantes increíblemente talentosos, Sr. Rivera, y el gran trabajo de los estudiantes de MV Mariachi.
Este último fin de semana, MV Mariachi y MV Folklorico agotaron las entradas del Bainbridge Island Performing Art Center y actuaron con canciones tradicionales del Día de Los Muertos. Centennial organiza la Asamblea de la Herencia Nativa Americana
Centennial tuvo una gran lista de invitados que hablaron en la Asamblea de la Herencia Nativa Americana de esta mañana. Gracias Centennial por ser anfitrión y un gran reconocimiento a los oradores invitados: Megan Balatche, Claudia Tiepelman y Eric Day.

Esta semana visité las aulas de Madison y Centennial Elementary, Mount Baker Middle School y MVHS. Vi a estudiantes participando en sus actividades de matemáticas en las aulas de Gracie Woolley y Leah Bright. Si bien mi enfoque principal en Centennial era visitar especialistas, tuve la oportunidad de visitar la clase de la pasante Makenna Drye, donde los estudiantes estaban creando sus propias historias. En las clases de René Godina, Alix Glossen y Jenny Bergsma vi a los estudiantes demostrar su aprendizaje con entusiasmo. En Mount Baker, el nivel de participación activa de los estudiantes en lectura, matemáticas, robótica y artes digitales fue impresionante. Gracias Geri Cleve, Korinne Getz, Jodi Burkholder y Drew Holzinger por la oportunidad de visitar sus aulas.
Por último, el objetivo de mi visita a la escuela secundaria fue la instrucción en el departamento de matemáticas. Operación Luz Verde
La Operación Luz Verde reúne a numerosas ciudades y condados para expresar solidaridad con nuestros Veteranos iluminando sus estructuras con un brillo verde. Esta iniciativa ofrece una oportunidad significativa para demostrar el respaldo de nuestra comunidad a los veteranos locales. Únase a nosotros para mostrar su apoyo del 6 al 12 de noviembre iluminando su edificio o casa en verde para rendir homenaje a nuestros veteranos.
Impulsores de música MVHS
