Mount Vernon School District Instructional Materials Committee

he Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) meets quarterly to review and recommend curriculum resources to ensure alignment with MVSD Policy 2020, Washington State Standards, and the MVSD Strategic Plan. The IMC also reviews requests for District adoptions, including alternative core, intervention, and supplementary materials, as well as current District-approved instructional resources, and makes recommendations to the Superintendent and School Board. The IMC will also review requests related to the protest of core instructional materials that cannot be resolved at the building level.

  • A teacher from each of the elementary, middle, and high school levels

  • A teacher OR administrator representing multilingual programs

  • A teacher OR administrator representing student support services
  • Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Directors (Elementary, Secondary, and Equity)
  • Family/Parent Representation (making up no more than half of the committee)

IMC Members Availability

  • IMC Members need to be available for four meetings (October, January, March, May), which will take place from 4:00-5:30 pm

Membership Term Length

  • Membership term length for teachers and parents/guardians is two school years

IMC Recruitment and Selection Process

A structured, transparent process will be used to recruit and select members for its Instructional Materials Committee (IMC). The district will announce openings through multiple platforms and will accept applications for three weeks via an online Instructional Materials Committee Interest Form. Applicants will need to be current MVSD parents, guardians, or residents, and applications will be reviewed to ensure balanced representation by school level, grade, and demographics. If five or fewer individuals apply, all eligible applicants will be appointed; if more, a lottery with representation safeguards will determine selection and establish a waitlist. Final appointments will be approved by the school board or superintendent, and all documentation will be retained for public record. Selected members will receive an onboarding packet outlining the committee’s purpose, meeting schedule, expectations, and training, while all applicants will be notified of their status. MVSD will also maintain an active interest pool for future vacancies or subcommittees.

Instructional Materials Selection Process for Core Instructional Materials

Core Instructional Materials must receive approval from the school board. A team composed of teachers and administrators will evaluate the course design and core curriculum, which may include field testing one or more curricula. This team will present their findings and recommendations to the IMC, in accordance with the procedures outlined in School Board Policy 2020. The IMC will then decide whether to endorse their recommendation, which will subsequently be forwarded to the school board for final approval of the curriculum adoption.

Instructional Materials Selection Process for Alternative Core, Intervention, Supplemental, and Temporary Supplemental Materials

Alternative core, intervention, supplemental, and temporary supplemental materials do not require board approval. When alternative core and intervention programs are being considered for use, a request for review and recommendation should first come to the IMC. The same process should be followed for standardized supplemental materials.
