Happy Friday, 

It's Friday, and we’ve now had a full week back since Spring Break. I hope you had plenty of time to enjoy the great weather. I also hope that over break you were able to spend some quality time with your family/friends/community. Speaking of quality time, the Tulip Festival comes once a year and provides many opportunities for us to enjoy the valley and support our local community. This weekend you can enjoy the Kiwanis Salmon BBQ, the 30th Annual Spring Garage Sale, The PACCAR Technical Center Open House, and music at Bertelsen’s Winery and Bethany Covenant Church. 

Assistant Principals Week
Assistant Principals Week is a time for us to express our heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering dedication and commitment our assistant principals bring to our schools and community. Their tireless efforts ensure that every student receives the support and guidance they need to thrive academically and feel safe in their learning environment. We are grateful for all that they do, and we celebrate them this week and every week for their invaluable contributions. Thank you, assistant principals!

Autism Awareness month
Autism Awareness Month is a time to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for individuals on the autism spectrum. Throughout April, we aim to raise awareness about autism, dispel myths, and educate the public about the diverse strengths and challenges of individuals with autism. It's an opportunity to celebrate the unique talents and perspectives of people with autism and to advocate for their rights to access education, employment, and support services. By fostering a more inclusive school, we can create a world where everyone, regardless of their neurodiversity, is embraced for who they are. For more information on Autism awareness, click here.  

Exploring Pillar 1: Mission, Vision, and Core Values through Classroom Visits
This week, I had a chance to visit classrooms at Little Mountain Elementary and Harriet Rowley Elementary.  At Harriet Rowley, I stopped by Kristie Lindsay and Whitney Doran’s classrooms where students worked on their literacy skills.  I also joined Principal Ashleigh Moe and Assistant Principal Nate Shepard as we visited classrooms to recognize students who moved up an ARC level in their Reading.   

Student and Staff Calendar
During Wednesday's school board meeting, the board approved the calendar for the upcoming year. We want to thank the hardworking staff who dedicated their time to finalize this calendar for our staff and parents. To access the calendar, please visit our web page by clicking here.

Nutrition Services Grade “A”
OSPI recently notified us about the successful procurement review (2022-23 school year) of our Nutrition Services Department. This annual review ensures compliance with state and federal regulations surrounding Code of Conduct and Procurement Procedures. The audit/review is detailed and involves examination of all purchases, invoices, receipts, contracts and more. As OSPI states in their letter to us, their goal is to assist in “...providing nutritious meals each day that meet standards outlined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and USDA regulations. Thank you for your efforts to operate quality nutrition programs that prepare children for learning and promote life-long healthy living.”  Special thanks to Supervisor Cheyenne Walker and the nutrition services team for their outstanding work in this review. 

Board Study Session at Washington Elementary
Washington Elementary hosted the school board's study session this week, providing a platform for students and staff to showcase the exceptional work happening within their school community. We want to thank Washington Elementary for their hospitality and for allowing us to witness the outstanding achievements of their students and educators.

MVHS Migrantes Unidos get creative
Recently, students from the Migrantes Unidos MV Club collaborated with the Mount Vernon Library to showcase their artistic talents by decorating the library windows for the annual Tulip Festival contest. Their artwork beautifully represents the club's activities, the scenic beauty of the community, and its diversity. Little Mountain Breakfast and Books
This week Little Mountain Elementary hosted the 1st grade Breakfast and Books event.  This special morning drew in students from the high school, and local resources like the MVPD.  Thank you Little Mountain staff for helping coordinate this wonderful event.  

LIA interview 
This week, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Juan and Wander, students from MVHS LIA. Our discussion centered around the themes of perseverance and professional excellence. I am grateful to these students for highlighting the diversity of our region and for providing me with the opportunity to share my insights.

Kinder Registration
Kinder Registration has begun for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.  If you know a family who has a child turning 5 by August 31, 2024, please feel free to share this information with them. Registration packets can be filled out online here.

This month I visited with Director, Melissa Van Straten, as she shared about the upcoming Kinder Connect event, and Kindergarten registration. I hope you get a chance to view and share with our families.  You can find the video here.  

Madison Elementary Dual Language program
If you would like to apply for the Madison Dual Language Program for the 2024-2025 school year, applications are available on their website. Applications are due by Friday, May 3rd, 2024 at 5:00 PM. Applications not turned in by May 3rd, may go on the waiting list. 

Don't Forget about Science Night!
The MVHS is hosting the annual Science Night. This FREE event is taking place on Thursday April 18, from 5-8 pm.  There will be Planetarium shows, hands-on activities, local business and organizations that use science, and so much more.  Be sure to stop by and bring your family and friends.  You can find out more on their website here.

Safety, Security, and Technology Levy
By now you know that we are rerunning the Safety, Security, and Technology replacement levy, and it will be on the April 23rd ballot.  This week we hosted our second of three community forums. The forum is via Zoom at 6:00 PM. The April 16th event is in person at Madison Elementary and via zoom and Facebook Live.  You might also want to read this article that was in the Skagit Valley Herald on April 2, 2024, authored by Racquel Muncy.  We hope to see you on the 16th for the last forum!

• Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club turned 100 this year!  A huge Thank You for their continued partnership with the Mount Vernon School District.  Each year they award scholarships to our outstanding students, while promoting community and connection.  Congratulations on turning 100 and here's to 100 more!

• Baseball ranked top 10 in the state
• Boys soccer came back from being down 2-0 to beat ranked Bellingham 4-3! 
• Softball is on a two game winning streak
• Golf, tennis and track & field are look forward to more sunshine as their heavy competitions season is mid April to the start of may

Feliz viernes,

Es viernes y ya hemos tenido una semana completa desde las vacaciones de primavera. Espero que haigas tenido mucho tiempo para disfrutar del buen clima. También espero que durante las vacaciones haigan podido pasar un momento agradable con sus familia/amigos/comunidad. Hablando de tiempo de calidad, el Festival de los Tulipanes se celebra una vez al año y nos brinda muchas oportunidades para disfrutar del valle y apoyar a nuestra comunidad local. Este fin de semana podrá disfrutar de la barbacoa de salmón Kiwanis, la trigésima venta anual de garaje de primavera, la jornada de puertas abiertas del Centro Técnico PACCAR y música en Bertelsen's Winery y Bethany Covenant Church.

Semana de subdirectores
La Semana de los Subdirectores es un momento para que expresemos nuestra más sincera gratitud por la dedicación y el compromiso inquebrantables que nuestros subdirectores aportan a nuestras escuelas y comunidad. Sus incansables esfuerzos garantizan que cada estudiante reciba el apoyo y la orientación que necesita para prosperar académicamente y sentirse seguro en su entorno de aprendizaje. Estamos agradecidos por todo lo que hacen y los celebramos esta semana y todas las semanas por sus invaluables contribuciones. ¡Gracias, subdirectores!

Mes de concientización sobre el autismo
El Mes de Concientización sobre el Autismo es un momento para promover la comprensión, la aceptación y la inclusión de las personas en el espectro del autismo. A lo largo de abril, nuestro objetivo es crear conciencia sobre el autismo, disipar mitos y educar al público sobre las diversas fortalezas y desafíos de las personas con autismo. Es una oportunidad para celebrar los talentos y perspectivas únicos de las personas con autismo y defender sus derechos de acceso a la educación, el empleo y los servicios de apoyo. Al fomentar una escuela más inclusiva, podemos crear un mundo en el que todos, independientemente de su neurodiversidad, sean aceptados por quienes son. Explorando el Pilar 1: Misión, Visión y Valores Fundamentales a través de visitas a las aulas
Esta semana, tuve la oportunidad de visitar las aulas de las escuelas primarias Little Mountain y Harriet Rowley. En Harriet Rowley, pasé por las aulas de Kristie Lindsay y Whitney Doran, donde los estudiantes trabajaron en sus habilidades de alfabetización. También me uní a la directora Ashleigh Moe y al subdirector Nate Shepard mientras visitábamos las aulas para reconocer a los estudiantes que avanzaron un nivel ARC en lectura.

Servicios de Nutrición Grado “A”
OSPI nos notificó recientemente sobre la revisión exitosa de adquisiciones (año escolar 2022-23) de nuestro Departamento de Servicios de Nutrición. Esta revisión anual garantiza el cumplimiento de las regulaciones estatales y federales relacionadas con el Código de conducta y los procedimientos de adquisiciones. La auditoría/revisión es detallada e implica el examen de todas las compras, facturas, recibos, contratos y más. Como lo indica OSPI en su carta, su objetivo es ayudar a “...proporcionar comidas nutritivas todos los días que cumplan con los estándares descritos por las Guías Alimentarias para los Estadounidenses y las regulaciones del USDA. Gracias por sus esfuerzos para operar programas de nutrición de calidad que preparen a los niños para el aprendizaje y promuevan una vida saludable durante toda la vida”. Un agradecimiento especial a la supervisora Cheyenne Walker y al equipo de servicios de nutrición por su excelente trabajo en esta revisión.

Sesión de estudio de la junta en la escuela primaria Washington
La primaria Washington fue sede de la sesión de estudio de la junta escolar esta semana, brindando una plataforma para que los estudiantes y el personal muestren el trabajo excepcional que se realiza dentro de su comunidad escolar. Queremos agradecer a la Primaria Washington por su hospitalidad y por permitirnos ser testigos de los logros sobresalientes de sus estudiantes y educadores.

MVHS Migrantes Unidos se pone creativo
Recientemente, estudiantes del Club Migrantes Unidos MV colaboraron con la Biblioteca Mount Vernon para mostrar sus talentos artísticos decorando las ventanas de la biblioteca para el concurso anual Tulip Festival. Sus obras de arte representan maravillosamente las actividades del club, la belleza escénica de la comunidad y su diversidad. Estoy compartiendo un par de fotos a continuación. Desayuno y libros en Little Mountain
Esta semana, la Primaria Little Mountain organizó el evento Desayuno y Libros de primer grado. Esta mañana especial atrajo a estudiantes de la escuela preparatoria y a recursos locales como el MVPD. Gracias al personal de Little Mountain por ayudar a coordinar este maravilloso evento.

Entrevista con LIA
Esta semana tuve el placer de ser entrevistado por Juan y Wander, estudiantes de MVHS LIA. Nuestra discusión se centró en los temas de perseverancia y excelencia profesional. Agradezco a estos estudiantes por resaltar la diversidad de nuestra región y por brindarme la oportunidad de compartir mis ideas.

Programa de Lenguaje Dual de la Primaria Madison
Si desea postularse para el Programa de Lenguaje Dual de Madison para el año escolar 2024-2025, las solicitudes están disponibles en su sitio web. Las solicitudes deben presentarse antes del viernes 3 de mayo de 2024 a las 5:00 p.m. Las solicitudes que no se entreguen antes del 3 de mayo pueden pasar a la lista de espera.

El MVHS organiza la Noche de Ciencias anual. Este evento GRATUITO se llevará a cabo el jueves 18 de abril de 5 a 8 p. m. Habrá espectáculos en el Planetario, actividades prácticas, empresas y organizaciones locales que utilizan la ciencia y mucho más. Asegúrese de pasar y traer a su familia y amigos. Impuesto sobre seguridad, protección y tecnología
A estas alturas ya sabe que vamos a volver a ejecutar el impuesto de reemplazo de seguridad, protección y tecnología, y estará en la boleta electoral del 23 de abril. Esta semana organizamos nuestro segundo de tres foros comunitarios. El foro es vía Zoom a las 6:00 p.m. El evento del 16 de abril será en persona en Madison Elementary y vía zoom y Facebook Live. • ¡Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club cumplió 100 años este año! Muchas gracias por su continua asociación con el Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon. Cada año otorgan becas a nuestros estudiantes destacados, mientras promueven la comunidad y la conexión. ¡Felicitaciones por cumplir 100 años y por 100 más!
• Felicitaciones deportivas:
• El béisbol se ubicó entre los 10 mejores del estado
• ¡El fútbol masculino remontó una desventaja de 2-0 para vencer al clasificado Bellingham por 4-3!
• El softbol lleva una racha de dos victorias consecutivas
• El golf, el tenis y el atletismo esperan más sol, ya que su temporada de competiciones intensas se extiende desde mediados de abril hasta principios de mayo.
