Student featured on KBRC radio
MVHS student, Charlie Martz, was recently interviewed for radio station KBRC Classic Hits. Charlie is a student at MVHS who is supported within our SLC program and is blind. He is extremely talented and quite a fan of classic rock! His TVI (Teacher for Vision Impairment), Zac Small, is providing accompaniment on the guitar. This is a wonderful highlight of the work we provide in MVSD and our greater region. As one of the only districts with a TVI/COMS team (Zac Small & Johanna Tracy), we not only provide very specialized services for our blind and vision impaired population, but also for several other districts in the region. Comprehensive TVI and COMS (Orientation and Mobility services) support a large variety of vision and mobility needs inclusive of a large spectrum of students with multiple disabilities. We are very fortunate to have accommodated this service in the region for many years considering the limitations in the northwest Washington region for accessible services for the blind and low vision population.
MVHS Gear Up students work with WWU
As part of a joint project between Gear Up and WWU, MVHS students had an opportunity to build a high-powered microscope this past summer. This was a great opportunity for our students to connect with a university, as many will be first generation college students. You can read the full story HERE.
Award given to MVSD School Psychologist, Golda Hornbacher
Golda Hornbacher recently won an award from her colleagues at the State Association conference held by the WA State Association of School Psychologists. She is recognized as this year's recipient of the "Best Practices: Consultation" award, one of the domains of practice that School Psychologists fulfill. Golda is a veteran School Psychologist, and an example of teamwork in our district. She is dedicated and skilled in supporting parents as they navigate the Special Education program, and dedicates her knowledge and time as she works with new interns. Congratulations, Golda!
Special Award given to MVHS teacher Ramon Rivera
Congratulations to Ramon Rivera, who has been selected as the 2022-2023 WIAA/WMEA Music Educator of the Year for Washington State! Ramon is also being nominated for the regional and national level awards, administered by the National Federation of High Schools. We wish you the best of luck, and thank you for representing the Mount Vernon School District.
Distinguished Educator Award for WAETAG 2022
Congratulations to Andy Bishop for receiving the Distinguished Educator Award for WAETAG (Washington Association Educators of the Talented and Gifted) 2022!! Mr. Bishop is a fourth and fifth grade teacher in the Voyager Program (highly capable) at Jefferson Elementary. His passions in the classroom include project-based learning, videography, music composition, writing, reading, and social/emotional intelligence in children. Andy and fellow teacher, Chad Norman, will be presenting at the WAETAG Conference this weekend! Congratulations, Andy!!
Washington Elementary receives instrument donation
Washington Elementary received a sizable instrument donation from Walter Cano, director of Seattle JazzEd. Washington PTO reached out to Walter to see if he had any instruments he could donate to Washington Elementary, and the timing was perfect, as he was in the process of upgrading his inventory. Cano has family in MV, and was happy to donate over 30 instruments (valued in the thousands) in great playing condition. Washington received several flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, a trombone and some percussion kits. Washington currently has about 25 students enrolled in band, and hopes to continue to increase its numbers. This donation will help greatly! Thank you, Walter Cano!
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 29, 2022
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day events are planned at several locations in Skagit County on Saturday, October 29th. This national initiative, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of drugs, while also educating the public about the potential for misuse of medications.
The following locations will be holding take back events on October 29th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
- Anacortes: Anacortes Police Department, 1218 24th Street
- Mount Vernon: Skagit Valley College, 2405 E. College Way
- Sedro-Woolley: Sedro-Woolley City Hall, 325 Metcalf Street
AVID students selected as finalist for QuestBridge Match Scholarship
Two of our MVHS AVID students were notified yesterday that they were selected as QuestBridge Match Scholarship finalists - Karla Silverio and David Pacheco-Castaneda. QuestBridge is a very competitive, national program that has an extensive application process for the top HS students around the country. Both Karla and David now have the opportunity to be “matched” with some of the most respected universities in the U.S. and have all costs covered for their school. If they are not “matched” they still have the chance for admission to these schools and possibly some very generous financial aid.

Shout Outs:
- Our Transportation team did an amazing job teaching bus safety last week and this week to our students, as part of National School Bus Safety week.
- Eric Monson (with help from Christina Crim) purchased, organized, assembled (with help from the school SpEd students), and delivered 350 emergency preparedness buckets. One to every school and classroom in the district. Nice job, Eric and Christina.

Estudiante Apareció en una entrevista de KBRC

Estudiantes de MVHS Gear Up trabajan con WWU
Como parte de un proyecto conjunto entre Gear Up y WWU, los estudiantes de MVHS tuvieron la oportunidad de construir un microscopio de alta potencia el verano pasado. Esta fue una gran oportunidad para que nuestros estudiantes se conectaran con una universidad, ya que muchos serán estudiantes universitarios de primera generación. Premio a la psicóloga escolar de MVSD, Golda Hornbacher
Golda Hornbacher ganó recientemente un premio de sus colegas en la conferencia de la Asociación Estatal celebrada por la Asociación de Psicólogos Escolares del Estado de WA. Golda es reconocida como la ganadora de este año del premio "Mejores prácticas: consulta", uno de los dominios de práctica que cumplen los psicólogos escolares. Golda es una psicóloga escolar veterana y un ejemplo de trabajo en equipo en nuestro distrito. Premio especial para al maestro de MVHS Ramón Rivera
¡Felicitaciones a Ramón Rivera, que ha sido seleccionado como el Educador de Música del Año 2022-2023 de WIAA/WMEA para el estado de Washington! Ramón también está siendo nominado para los premios a nivel regional y nacional, administrados por la Federación Nacional de Escuelas Secundarias. ¡Felicitaciones a Andy Bishop por recibir el Premio de Educador Distinguido de WAETAG (Educadores de la Asociación de Washington para Talentosos y Dotados) 2022! El Sr. Bishop es maestro de cuarto y quinto grado en el Programa Voyager (altamente capacitado) en la Primaria Jefferson. Washington Elementary recibe donación de instrumentos
Washington Elementary recibió una donación considerable de instrumentos de Walter Cano, director de Seattle JazzEd. EL PTO de Washington se conecto con Walter para ver si tenía algún instrumento que pudiera donar a la Escuela Primaria Washington, y el momento fue perfecto, ya que estaba en proceso de actualizar su inventario. Cano tiene familia en MV y estuvo feliz de donar más de 30 instrumentos (valuados en miles) en excelentes condiciones para tocar. Washington recibió varias flautas, clarinetes, saxofones, trompetas, un trombón y algunos kits de percusión. Washington actualmente tiene alrededor de 25 estudiantes matriculados en banda y espera seguir aumentando su número. ¡Esta donación ayudará mucho! ¡Gracias, Walter Cano!
Día nacional de devolución de medicamentos recetados el 29 de octubre de 2022
Los eventos del Día Nacional de Devolución de Medicamentos Recetados están planificados en varios lugares del condado de Skagit el sábado 29 de octubre. Esta iniciativa nacional, patrocinada por la Administración para el Control de Drogas (DEA, por sus siglas en inglés), tiene como objetivo proporcionar un medio seguro, conveniente y responsable para desechar las drogas, al mismo tiempo que se educa al público sobre el potencial de uso indebido de medicamentos.
Los siguientes lugares llevarán a cabo eventos de devolución el 29 de octubre de 10 a. m. a 2 p. m.:
- Anacortes: Departamento de Policía de Anacortes, 1218 24th Street
- Mount Vernon: Skagit Valley College, 2405 E. College Way
- Sedro-Woolley: Ayuntamiento de Sedro-Woolley, 325 Metcalf Street
Estudiantes de AVID seleccionados como finalistas para la beca QuestBridge Match
Dos de nuestros estudiantes AVID de MVHS fueron notificados ayer que fueron seleccionados como finalistas de la Beca QuestBridge Match: Karla Silverio y David Pacheco-Castaneda. QuestBridge es un programa nacional muy competitivo que tiene un extenso proceso de solicitud para los mejores estudiantes de secundaria de todo el país. Tanto Karla como David ahora tienen la oportunidad de ser "emparejados" con algunas de las universidades más respetadas de los EE. UU y tienen todos los costos cubiertos para su escuela. Si no son "emparejados", todavía tienen la oportunidad de ser admitidos en estas escuelas y posiblemente alguna ayuda financiera muy generosa.
