Happy Friday,

LaVenture teaches students Hispanic culture
This week I had an opportunity to sit with middle school students at LaVenture during one of their Hispanic Heritage Month activities.  Students learned about hojalata, popular artwork that includes using aluminum foil or tin.  Students were able to take home a handmade, vibrant piece of art that could be cherished for years to come.

MVHS LIA students host special event

Latinos in Action CEO, Dr. Enriquez visited Mount Vernon High School this week and had an opportunity to speak to our students. Dr. Enriquez shared his inspiring story of overcoming the struggles in his own life, while giving hope and encouragement to our students. There were lots of people who helped organize this event, so THANK YOU, MVHS team for all of your help.

Student Focused Balanced Calendar (SFBC) Update
This week members of the SFBC Planning Team had an opportunity to attend the Balanced Calendar Fall Summit hosted by OSPI (Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction). This summit gave our district an opportunity to hear from national experts and hear from some of the 40+ districts in the state who are also exploring this balanced calendar concept. OSPI Superintendent Reykdal shared his hopes for the initiative, and took time to stop by and answer our questions during our team planning time.  As we move forward, there will be frequent and transparent opportunities in the near future to listen, learn, and provide input.  We will continue to add information on our website which you can find HERE.  Please stay tuned as there will be more to come as we determine if and how a SFBC might better serve our students, staff, families, and community.

Shout Outs:

  • Thank you, Transportation team for reading to our students.  Bus drivers volunteered their time to stop by the elementary schools and read with students as part of the Literacy for All, All for Literacy initiative.
  • Thank you, Board president Larry Otos, for taking time to read to our students this week at Jefferson Elementary.  Students were excited to have an opportunity to read to you as well!
  • I want to give MVHS student, Isaac Holt, a big shout out for covering the Ribbon Cutting & Centennial Celebration.  He did a great job of capturing stories of the past, while highlighting this special event. Thank you, Isaac! You can find his interview HERE.
  • I also want to recognize MVHS student, Sayer Theiss, a 10th-grade percussionist/guitar player from the high school, for his accompaniment to a district gift donor. Tom Theisen, long-time supporter and former Project Architect for several construction projects, handmade and donated two Cajon drums to the district. Tom and Sayer demonstrated how they are used.
  • This week was National School Lunch week.  I want to thank ALL of our Food Service Staff for their continued support in keeping our students healthy. Thank you!

Feliz viernes,
