Curriculum & Assessment

Middle School Curriculum

Mount Vernon's middle school curriculum (grades 6-8) builds on the elementary foundation while introducing the increased rigor, depth, and content-area specialization that prepare students for high school. Curricular materials are reviewed and refreshed on a cycle aligned to Washington State Learning Standards.

By subject area

English Language Arts (ELA)

Middle school ELA uses Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Collections as the anchor text, with novel studies and supplementary readings selected by grade-level teams. Standards: Washington ELA Standards.

Spanish Language Arts (Dual Language)

LaVenture Middle School's Dual Language program uses locally developed Spanish Language Arts units focused on biliteracy. Units mirror the ELA Common Core standards while drawing on Spanish-language literature and authentic cultural texts.

Mathematics

Middle school math is undergoing renewal alongside the elementary pilot. Current materials align to Washington Math Standards; the adopted text will be updated here after the board's 2026 decision.

Science

Middle school science uses Amplify Science, a phenomenon-based NGSS-aligned curriculum that puts students in the role of practicing scientists. Three-dimensional learning across earth, life, and physical sciences.

Social Studies

Middle school social studies uses Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook, with grade-level themes covering ancient civilizations, U.S. history, and Washington State studies.

Health

Middle school health uses Comprehensive Health from Goodheart-Willcox, aligned to Washington Health and Physical Education Learning Standards.

Physical Education

Middle school PE follows Achieve! PE Middle School, which builds personal fitness, sport-specific skills, and lifelong wellness habits.

Positive Behavior

Mount Vernon's schoolwide behavior framework, Safe and Civil Schools, continues at the middle school level with developmentally appropriate routines, supports, and restorative practices.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

Middle school SEL uses CharacterStrong, which builds skills like empathy, communication, self-awareness, and ethical decision-making through weekly lessons.
