Addams Family Musical 
The Lincoln Theatre will be showing the Addams Family Musical from March 17 - April 2 and our very own talented staff and students will be part of their cast, as well as production crew.  Congratulations to  Renee Garman (teacher @ Jefferson), Barrett Brockman (Jefferson Student), Kayalyn Stewart (teacher @ LaVenture), Kennedy Hurtado-Stewart (LVMS), Rocco Lopez (MVHS), Sierra Davis (LVMS), Abigail Wright (LVMS), Decatur Carpenter-Eels (LVMS), Milana Nikitov (LVMS).  For more information, you can check out their website here.  

Latino Legislative Day
This week the MVHS Folklorico performed virtually for Gov. Jay Inslee during the Latino Legislative Day.  This special event gave us an opportunity to visit with Gov. Inslee, showcase our talented students, and honor Iris Carias with the Latino Civil Award for her work on the Mount Vernon City Council.  I’ve included a picture below.  Thank you to our students for their thoughtful questions to Gov. Inslee and for continuing to share their stories through Folklorico.  

Bus Driver Appreciation Day
This week we celebrate School Bus Drivers. Their fleet of 58 buses, driven by our amazing staff, run around the clock, allowing approximately 4,300 students to get to school, home, or events safely!  Their mission is to transport each student in a safe, kind and nurturing environment every single day.  Thank you, team, for your hard work and dedication!  I am including a throwback picture from the Lighted Parade. 

Unified Basketball
This winter MVHS kicked off its first ever Unified Basketball season.  Unified Sports is a program through the Special Olympics where high school students with and without special needs play on sports teams together and compete against other area schools.  MVHS has offered Unified Soccer since 2014, and basketball has been an exciting edition to our offerings!  Most of our students were fairly new to playing basketball, but that was no problem at all.  Our biggest priorities were having fun, learning new skills, and facilitating inclusive opportunities for all students.  Please enjoy this video highlighting our student athletes!  Way to go team! 

Shout Outs:

• Kelley Kirkpatrick, MVHS Debate Team Coach, received a Second Diamond Award for her contribution to the MVHS Speech and Debate team.  Per the National Speech and Debate Association, “To earn a Diamond Award, a coach must be a member of the National Speech & Debate Association for at least five years. Coaches earn additional awards with more points earned in the Honor Society. A coach who attains 15,000 points is awarded a first Diamond; they receive a second Diamond for 30,000 points, a third for 45,000 points, and so on. Five years must pass between each Diamond Award.”  Congratulations Kelley! 

Sports:
Congratulations to all of our students who participated in sports this last season, here are some of the finals: 

• Boys swim team had a great STATE meet!  Wyatt Carlton swimming - 2nd place in 200 Free and STATE Champ in 100 Fly.  Dan Levasseur 11th in 100 back. 200 Free Relay was 14th - Wyatt Carlton, Dan Levasseur, Aidan Hanson, and Will Johnson

         400 Free Relay was 16th -  
         1) Wyatt Carlton 12             2) Daniel Levasseur 10         
         3) Andres Rivas 12              4) Will Johnson  12     

The Swim Team placed 15th out of 33 teams!

• Girls wrestling - Shecid Garcia-Quiroz was 6th in State
• Boys Wrestling - Ryan Wilson - 4th place wrestling 
• Boys Basketball - played in a State Regional game vs. Walla Walla - did not advance (played their hearts out!)
• Debate and Speech-this last weekend, students competed in Berkeley, CA.  Everyone learned a lot, and Taite Kirkpatrick brought home an octofinalist trophy!  They are at the beginning of their championship season this week. They have two weekends of National Qualification tournaments, starting tomorrow.  After that, they are headed to State Speech on March 11th and State Debate on March 18th and 19th.

Again, great job students!  Go Bulldogs!

Musical de la familia Addams

Día Legislativo Latino
Esta semana, el MVHS Folklórico se presentó virtualmente para el gobernador Jay Inslee durante el Día Legislativo Latino. Este evento especial nos dio la oportunidad de visitar al gobernador Inslee, mostrar a nuestros estudiantes talentosos y honrar a Iris Carias con el Premio Civil Latino por su trabajo en el Concejo Municipal de Mount Vernon. He incluido una imagen a continuación. Gracias a nuestros estudiantes por sus inteligentes preguntas al gobernador Inslee y por continuar compartiendo sus historias a través de Folklorico.

Día de Apreciación del Conductor de Autobús
Esta semana celebramos a los conductores de autobuses escolares. ¡Su flota de 58 autobuses, conducidos por nuestro increíble personal, funciona las 24 horas, lo que permite que aproximadamente 4,300 estudiantes lleguen a la escuela, el hogar o los eventos de manera segura! Su misión es transportar a cada estudiante en un ambiente seguro, amable y enriquecedor todos los días. ¡Gracias, equipo, por su arduo trabajo y dedicación! Baloncesto Unificado
Este invierno, MVHS inició su primera temporada de baloncesto unificado. Deportes Unificados es un programa a través de las Olimpiadas Especiales donde los estudiantes de secundaria con y sin necesidades especiales juegan juntos en equipos deportivos y compiten contra otras escuelas del área. ¡MVHS ha ofrecido Fútbol Unificado desde 2014, y el baloncesto ha sido una edición emocionante de nuestras ofertas! La mayoría de nuestros estudiantes eran bastante nuevos en el juego de baloncesto, pero eso no supuso ningún problema. Nuestras mayores prioridades eran divertirnos, aprender nuevas habilidades y facilitar oportunidades inclusivas para todos los estudiantes. ¡Disfrute de este video que destaca a nuestros estudiantes atletas! ¡Bien hecho equipo!

• Kelley Kirkpatrick, Entrenadora del Equipo de Debate de MVHS, recibió un Segundo Premio Diamante por su contribución al equipo de Oratoria y Debate de MVHS. Según la Asociación Nacional de Oratoria y Debate, “Para ganar un Premio Diamante, un entrenador debe ser miembro de la Asociación Nacional de Oratoria y Debate durante al menos cinco años. Los entrenadores ganan premios adicionales con más puntos ganados en la Sociedad de Honor. Un entrenador que alcanza los 15.000 puntos recibe un primer Diamante; reciben un segundo Diamante por 30 000 puntos, un tercero por 45 000 puntos, y así sucesivamente. Deben pasar cinco años entre cada Premio Diamante”. ¡Felicidades Kelly!

Deportes:
Felicitaciones a todos nuestros alumnos que participaron en deportes esta última temporada, aquí algunas de las finales:

• ¡El equipo de natación de niños tuvo una gran reunión de ESTADO! Natación de Wyatt Carlton: segundo lugar en 200 libres y campeón estatal en 100 moscas. Dan Levasseur 11º en 100 espalda. 200 relevos libres fue 14: Wyatt Carlton, Dan Levasseur, Aidan Hanson y Will Johnson

       400 relevos libres fue 16 -

     ¡El equipo de natación quedó en el puesto 15 de 33 equipos!

• Lucha libre femenina - Shecid Garcia-Quiroz fue 6° en el estado
• Boys Wrestling - Ryan Wilson - 4to lugar de lucha libre
• El baloncesto masculino, jugado en un juego estatal regional contra Walla Walla, no avanzó (¡jugaron con todo su corazón!)
• Debate y Oratoria: este fin de semana pasado, los estudiantes compitieron en Berkeley, CA. ¡Todos aprendieron mucho y Taite Kirkpatrick se llevó a casa un trofeo de octava final! Están al comienzo de su temporada de campeonato esta semana. Tienen dos fines de semana de torneos de Clasificación Nacional, a partir de mañana. Después de eso, se dirigirán a State Speech el 11 de marzo y State Debate el 18 y 19 de marzo.
