Happy Friday,

NCTA “See Yourself Here” event
This past Wednesday and Thursday, NCTA students and staff hosted a "See Yourself Here" event for students interested in learning more about NCTA.  Students from all over Skagit and Whatcom Counties participated in a large variety of programs that were led by current students. This was a wonderful way for students to lead learning activities!  Thank you to the great counseling/advising staff from our schools who also attended -- Nicole Chang, Hanine Castro, Shelly Supler, Barb Tanis, and Katrina Johnston!

Community Bulldog Award
This week we had an opportunity to show our appreciation to our service club organizations.  Mount Vernon Rotary, Skagit Rotary, and Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon have been great supporters of our district and students throughout the years. The generosity of volunteers in all local service organizations provides experiences and support to our community. Thank you service club members and organizations for all you do.

Rotary Student of the Month
This month, two high school seniors were awarded the Rotary Student of the Month award.  Jialin Chen and Spencer Solvey had an opportunity to speak to the Rotary members on Tuesday, sharing their experience in Mount Vernon and their future goals. Congratulations Jialin and Spencer!

Mount Vernon Rotary Dictionary Delivery
This week the Mount Vernon Rotary delivered over 570 McMillian student dictionaries to our 3rd grade students.  Rotary has been supporting the dictionary program for many years, along with the 12th Grade Rotary Student of the Month recognition. Their goodwill provides students with a beautiful hardcover book for their home. Please enjoy the pictures from this week's event.

Welcome HRE Principal
After a rigorous screening process, several interviews and intensive reference checks, Dr. Jordanne Nevin will be the next principal of Harriet Rowley.  Dr. Nevin will officially begin on July 1. Welcome, Dr. Nevin!

MVSD hosts EYE See Clinic
This week, the district hosted the mobile EYE See Clinic. This mobile service, founded and operated by Dr. Pearson OD, PhD, helps students access vision care, receive eye exams, and glasses. This valuable program served 59 of our students, and about 50 students were fitted for glasses that will be received soon!  A big thank you to our elementary based School Social Workers: Lindsay Phillips (Little Mountain / Harriet Rowley), Brad Edwards (Jefferson / Washington) and Julia Cohen (Centennial / Madison) for coordinating with Dr. Pearson and doing the planning to ensure its success. Thank you also to the School Nurse team for collaborating with the School Social Workers in identifying students most in need. We are planning for the EYE See Clinic to return and serve more of our students in the near future.

Art Exhibit features MVHS students
Mount Vernon High School Art students will have their artwork displayed in the Museum of Northwest Art, which is scheduled for February 18th - May 14, 2023.  If you’d like to take a look at the gallery, you can do so by clicking on this link.  Great job students!

TK students learn about Skagit Birds
The seven TK classes have been learning about the Skagit birds of winter and had an opportunity to take a trip to the Fir Island Farm Reserve. Students saw Snow Geese, Trumpeter Swans and Eagles along the way. Skagit Audubon birders (many former teachers) met the team at the reserve and had scopes and binoculars ready to help the students see the amazing sights. A biologist from Fish and Wildlife was there to share how she bands birds to study them. They  had the opportunity to explore owl diets by examining their pellets. It was an awesome experience and a great way to connect our community, land, and students.

El 17 de febrero

Feliz viernes,

¡Bienvenido, Dr. Nevin!

MVSD y la Clínica EYE See
