Happy Friday,
I hope you had a chance to spend some time to reflect on the impact that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had on our country and community. The many changes that Dr. King so tirelessly worked for are evident in our everyday lives. We honor and thank the contributions of Dr. King, and the many others who devoted their lives to shining a light on those areas in our country that needed awareness and change.
MVHS Art Department
Did you know that the MVHS has an art website? Students are working on art every day. Art teacher, Helene Zawila shared a video which has images from the various art activities happening in the classrooms. You can find the video HERE. Enjoy!
Treaty Day
Treaty Day is Saturday, January 21, 2023. We celebrate Treaty Day with the Skagit Valley Tribes, Swinomish, Upper Skagit, Sauk-Suiattle, and Samish, in recognition of the signing of the Treaty of 1855. We celebrate and honor the relationships that Indigenous peoples have maintained with the land, their commitment to cultural preservation, and their traditional practices. In our celebration, we respect and honor the language of the Treaty that maintains Indigenous sovereignty and protects Indigenous history.
Below are two resources that discuss the importance of Treaty Day. As appropriate, I encourage you to discuss the importance of Treaty Day in your classrooms. Ferndale School District has some additional resources that may be of interest to you.
LaVenture Middle School Marimba
Jefferson students were welcomed by the sound of Marimba this morning. The LaVenture Middle School Marimba group, directed by Amy McFeely, played upbeat music for students and staff as they arrived at school. What an energizing way to start your morning! Thank you LaVenture Marimba. Be sure to catch them at the upcoming Illuminight event in downtown Mount Vernon on Friday, January 27th at 5pm.
School Board Appreciation Month
We want to thank the board for their continued support and dedication to the Mount Vernon School District. This week they were honored with words and tokens of appreciation. Thank you students, families, and staff who were part of this, and again, thank you Mount Vernon School District board members, Larry Otos, Wendy Ragusa, Dr. Laura Cailloux-Flores, Marissa Guerrero, and Griffin Uchida.
Shout Outs:
- This last weekend’s Debate Invitational was a big success, with over 600 guests! Students again did an amazing job, and are on their way to Kamiak this weekend, their last hurdle to go through, to make it to state. A huge shout out to all of the students, and staff, including Kelley Kirkpatrick, Debate Coach, who helped organize and run this event, and good luck team! Good job students!

Espero que haya tenido la oportunidad de dedicar un tiempo a reflexionar sobre el impacto que tuvo el Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. en nuestro país y nuestra comunidad. Los muchos cambios por los que el Dr. King trabajó tan incansablemente son evidentes en nuestra vida cotidiana. Honramos y agradecemos las contribuciones del Dr. King y de muchos otros que dedicaron sus vidas a arrojar luz sobre aquellas áreas de nuestro país que necesitaban conciencia y cambio.

Día del Tratado
El Día del Tratado es el sábado 21 de enero de 2023. Celebramos el Día del Tratado con las Tribus del Valle Skagit, Swinomish, Upper Skagit, Sauk-Suiattle y Samish, en reconocimiento a la firma del Tratado de 1855. Celebramos y honramos las relaciones que los pueblos indígenas han mantenido con la tierra, su compromiso con la preservación cultural y sus prácticas tradicionales. En nuestra celebración, respetamos y honramos el lenguaje del Tratado que mantiene la soberanía Indígena y protege la historia Indígena.
A continuación hay dos recursos que discuten la importancia del Día del Tratado. Según corresponda, los animo a discutir la importancia del Día del Tratado en sus aulas. El Distrito Escolar de Ferndale tiene algunos recursos adicionales que pueden ser de su interés.
Marimba de la Escuela Secundaria LaVenture
Los estudiantes de Jefferson fueron recibidos con el sonido de la Marimba esta mañana. El grupo de marimba de LaVenture Middle School, dirigido por Amy McFeely, tocó música animada para los estudiantes y el personal cuando llegaron a la escuela. ¡Qué forma tan energizante de empezar la mañana! Mes de Apreciación de la Junta Escolar
Queremos agradecer a la junta por su continuo apoyo y dedicación al Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon. Esta semana fueron honrados con palabras y muestras de agradecimiento. Gracias a los estudiantes, las familias y el personal que formaron parte de esto y, nuevamente, gracias a los miembros de la junta del Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon, Larry Otos, Wendy Ragusa, la Dra.
