Childfind

Childfind is a program for developing and carrying out awareness and screening activities to locate, identify, and evaluate children who may have a disability. Mount Vernon School District’s Student Support Services serves students ages 3 through 22, including students experiencing homelessness or housing instability.

Developmental screening

Childfind screening is offered at no cost for children ages 3 to 5. During a screening, a child may be asked to do activities such as stack small blocks, cut with scissors, draw, count, name colors, and jump. A screening usually takes about 45 minutes.

Signs to watch for

Consider a screening if your child has:

  • A medical condition or birth difference that may affect development
  • A suspected hearing or vision problem
  • Difficulty communicating with people outside the family
  • Development that seems behind that of same-age peers
  • Social or emotional learning challenges

After the screening

After the screening, staff will discuss the results with you. Depending on the results, your child may be referred for additional testing, scheduled for a follow-up, or no further action may be needed.
