Please help us protect your child by assisting with the following:
Absences
Please notify the office if your child will be absent from school. ALL absences must be excused by the parent or guardian in a written notice to a school authority within two (2) school days (48 hours). The note must include:
The student's first and last names
The exact dates of absence
The reason for the absence
The signature of parent or guardian
A telephone call in the morning to the secretary is very much appreciated by our staff.
BECCA Bill - Parent Guide to School Attendance and Truancy
A State law (the BECCA Bill) requires schools to file a petition with Juvenile Court when a child accumulates five (5) unexcused absences in a month or ten (10) unexcused absences in the current school year. The court may schedule a hearing and require attendance of the child and parent. The court shall grant the petition and end an order assuming jurisdiction for the remainder of the school year. This law applies to all students in grades kindergarten through 12. On the 1st day of school, a detailed letter will be sent home. Please read carefully and sign the response form, returning it to school.
Superior Court Commissioners, Family Law Commissioners and Juvenile Judges have jurisdiction to hear these truancy petitions. The law authorizes courts to order options including a $25 a day fine, placement of students in detention, parent community service and parental confinement if parents and/or students are found in contempt to court orders.
Please assist us in managing your child's absences. With family schedules as complicated as they are, it may be unavoidable to plan vacations during the school year. However, such plans interrupt the continuity of student learning and we encourage you to instead take advantage of scheduled breaks. Should your child need to be absent from school for an extended period of time, please arrange in advance with his or her teacher for make up work to go home.
Tardiness
If your child is tardy, please send a note and have your child check into the office upon arrival. Please be aware that 3 unexcused tardies count as one unexcused absence, and therefore contribute to Becca Bill status. (See above)
