COURSES

Concert Choir
This class is open to all students by audition only.  This group is the premier classical choir at MVHS, and will perform concerts and participage at various festivals throughout the year.  Advanced study of vocal production, not reading, sight singing, and choral ensemble singing is included.

Ensync
This class is designed to introduce students to the concepts of vocal, jazz, soloing, listening, and group singing techniques.  Participation in concerts and attendance at Jazz Festivals is required.  Designed for those who want to sing jazz music only.

Guitar
A course for guitar players featuring: study of songs and chord progressions, scales and improvisation, various guitar styles such as blues, rock, pop and current trends, use of published music and tablature, and playing by ear.

Intermediate / Advanced Guitar
Intermediate to advanced guitar study of chord progressoins, bar chords, scales, improvisation, tablature, various guitar styles, and artists.  The role and use of the guitar in rock, folk, pop, blues, jazz, and current music.  Published music, guitar methods, tablature recorded music, and other guitar sources will be utilized as resources for this class.

Jazz Band I, II
This ensemble performs jazz, rock, blues, Latin, and other related forms of music,  Students will become aware of different jazz styles, composers, performers, and improvisation techniques.  This group performs at concerts, contests, dances, and other events.

Music Appreciation
This class is designed for the average student who is interested in a variety of styles of music - no prior musical skills are necessary.  The primary goal is to develop good listening skills.  Focus will include the role and importance of music in the lives of people of various cultures around the world.

Music Theory
Music Theory explores the fundamentals of music.  Course content includes: basic music writing skills, terminology, part-writing, harmony, scales, rhythm, chords, ear-training, arranging, transportation, and composition.  Students taking this course will broaden their general musical knowledge and gain the ability to compose and arrange music.

String Ensemble
This coursed gives students the opportunity to continue their string study.  Open by audition to all who play stringed instruments.  The orchestra performs a variety of music fo school concerts and several community functions.  Activities and tours are also planned.

Synergy
This select small enesemble (meeting outside the school day), will study vocal jazz music.  Solos, micropohone techniques, and recording are emphasized.  The group will perform at regularly scheduled school concerts and vocal jazz festivals and represent MVHS at various community events.

Treble Choir
This class offers an advanced study of vocal production, note reading, and sigh singing.  A special focus is on the female singing voice.  Regular concerts will be scheduled throughout the school year.

Wind Ensemble
This select performing group engages in an in-depth study of traditional and contemporary win music.  Emphasis on development of individual creativitiy, artistic quality, technical ability, and group concept.  Throughout the year, the group performs various concerts featuring traditional band literature such as marches, overtures, suites, contest selections, novely selections, and assorted concert music.
