This school year our annual canned food drive was from November 3rd through November 14th.  Once again our staff and students were very generous by bringing food to help those less fortunate.  We collected a total of 1344 cans of food, which will be donated to a local food bank and also fill the baskets for our own Madison needy families. Mrs. Needy’s 5th Grade class helped the PTO organize and count the canned food.

There was a competition of boys vs. girls amongst the students. The girls brought in 842 non-perishable items and the boys brought in 502 non-perishable items.  The top classes were: In first place (by a landslide!) Mrs. Needy’s 5th grade class brought in 314 items.  And with a tie for second and third place was Ms. Wilson and Mrs. Renne’s Kindergarten classes who each brought in 89 items.

Great job Madison Elementary for helping your community in so many ways!

Madison

Students

Vote

Students & staff who wanted to vote for President were invited to do so. Several students were willing to come around & explain why it is important to vote. They did not discuss their preference; only the importance of voting. They also explained how to vote if students and staff did not understand the directions. Students and staff could vote for Barack Obama, John McCain, or other.

The Madison Election Box was outside Mrs. Kerley’s classroom door. Students had to personally drop off their ballots in the Madison Election Box like in a real election. The tallies will be announced.

One student reaction to their chance to vote was, “It’s really cool because usually kids can’t vote.” The young lady said she was excited to vote and that this vote is like kids getting a chance to give their opinion.

Maidson Students vote with the country!

Madison Results:
Barack Obama - 81%
John McCain - 16%
Other - 3%

"Healthy Youth Survey" Coming In October

Healthy Youth Survey

This fall, Mount Vernon School District students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 and across Washington State will be asked to complete a Healthy Youth Survey. The survey asks questions that are related to students' increased risk of injury, poor health outcomes, and alcohol and drug use. Survey results are used by schools, communities and the state and local health departments to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks. The survey is scheduled for the week of October 13-17, 2008.

Student participation is completely voluntary and anonymous and the administration procedures are designed to protect student privacy and anonymity. Students are not asked for their names or identification numbers when they complete the survey.

Additional information about the Healthy Youth Survey 2008 can be found at the following web sites: http://www.hys.wa.gov/ and www3.doh.wa.gov/hys. To opt out of participation in the survey, please contact us at 360-428-6131.

School is Back in Full Swing!

Madison students filed off the bus this morning ready to learn.  Students, armed with new pencils and backpacks, found their classrooms and started up the learning in full swing.  Madison teachers are prepared and excited to educate the children.  The first day of school is always filled with a sense of newness, and this year there was no exception.  We would like to remind parents that class starts promptly at 9:00 AM.  The doors open at 8:30 AM for breakfast. All students at Madison are eligible for free breakfast.  Students are required to go to breakfast before they can go to the playground. Students are not permitted to be on campus before 8:30 AM; there is not a staff member available to supervise your child before this time. Parents must sign in at the office and get a visitors pass to be on campus during school hours.  Please call the office if you have any questions.  The office can be reached at 360-428-6131 between 7:45 AM and 3:45 PM.
