LME Be the Change Healthy
School Forum: Great Success!
Thank you to all the LME families, students and staff that participated in the first Be the Change event on March 18, 2008. It was very well attended. The goal of this event was to bring our school families together to learn about the Healthy School Project and to discuss health issues facing children today. While adults were meeting in the cafeteria to hear the presentation and to contribute their ideas in an open group discussion, students enjoyed active stations in the gymnasium.
If you would like to get involved it's not too late! There is another meeting for parents in the Little Mountain Great Hall (by the office) from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m on Thursday, April 10, 2008. This meeting will focus on next steps for this program based on the info gathered on March 18.

Safe Routes to School TIP: Be a walking role model. Children learn through experience. Walking with parents or another caregiver is an important way for children to practice crossing real streets and choosing safe places to walk. There is no magic age when children are old enough to walk without an adult. As a parent, you should decide when your child has the skills and experience to deal with traffic safely without you. As you walk with your child, always follow these safety tips: Wear bright-colored clothes, and carry flashlights or wear reflective gear if it is dark or hard to see. Look for traffic at every driveway and intersection. Be aware of drivers in parked cars that may be getting ready to move. Obey all traffic signs and signals. em Remember to cross the street safely: Stop at the curb or edge of the street. Look left, right, left again, behind you and in front of you for traffic. Wait until no traffic is coming and then begin crossing. Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing. Walk, don't run across the street. T TIP: Choose the safest route to school. Select a walking route with the least amount of traffic and intersections. Pick places where there are sidewalks or paths separated from traffic. If there are no sidewalks or paths, walk as far from the motor vehicles as possible and, if possible, on the side of the street facing traffic. Limit the number of street crossings. When available, cross at a location with an adult school crossing guard. Avoid crossing busy or high-speed streets. M Mount Vernon School District's Safe Routes to Schools program was designed to support the school district's Nutrition, Physical Education, Activity and Wellness Policy (#6700 & #6700P). The policy encourages life-long patterns of healthy eating and regular physical activity. For more information about the Safe Routes to Schools program or for volunteer opportunities, please contact Tammy Oommen, SRTS Coordinator, 360-428-6104 ext. 2481. Early Arrivals Student
safety is our top concern! Supervision is not available on our school
campus before 7:45am. To protect your child and maintain a safe
environment, students may not arrive before 7:45am. Thank you for your
understanding.
