Lincoln Gets Makeover

If you haven't seen it already, you will be in for a surprise when you return to school this fall. Over the summer, Lincoln School received a much needed repainting of its exterior. The longtime green and white color of our school has become a handsome burgundy color. The hairline cracks and other signs of age were also repaired to give us a beautiful new look without loosing the historic 1920's era architectural style.

Inside,  a new phone system is being installed as a part of the E-Rate grant recently received. Some teachers are also receiving new classroom mini-computer labs--five new student computers as well as a digital projector and document camera. This continues the upgrade of technology across all classrooms begun last year.

Along with the exterior paint and interior technological improvements, students and families will notice a new reading program in our classrooms. Teachers have been learning how to use this new curriculum during the summer and will continue to learn more during further professional development classes as the year goes on.

PARENTS--Be sure to stop by your child's teacher's classroom soon and introduce yourself. Let them know anything they ought to know about your child's special needs or special issues in their life. Knowing these things, a teacher can alter the way they might otherwise work with your child. The information will be treated with complete confidentiality.

LEAF Awarded For Good Works
Last week Lincoln's environmental club, LEAF, was honored in Olympia for the work they have done in the Mount Vernon community.  They have sold reusable shopping bags at the Farmer's Market and helped clear unwanted ivy at Hillcrest Park to name a few of their accomplishments. The Washington State Department of Ecology invited Ms. Vaughn, the LEAF coordinator and several student members of the group to go to Olympia to receive their recognition.

Lincoln Wins Food Competition

Congratulations! The Lincoln's Journey to Real Food video won the Real Food Is Video Contest created by the National Farm to School Network and sponsored by the LunchBox.

Lincoln's Journey to Real Food received the most votes in the open public voting period. The video is fun, inspiring, and educational. The goal of the contest was to encourage student advocacy to restore connections to community, food, land, and place through Farm to Cafeteria programs. Lincoln's video successfully explored the routes in the community to help make Farm to School a reality.

The $1,000 prize is to be expended on a cafeteria food project that honors the goal of starting a farm to school program. Also, one student representative and a select chaperone will have an all expenses paid trip to the 5th National Farm to Cafeteria Conference in Detroit, Michigan from May 17-19th, 2010 where the video will be shown to more than 600 participants.
